Tennis: Alex Eala back in PH, to train for Jingshan tilt after ranking boost

MANILA — Filipina tennis star Alex Eala is back in the Philippines for a short training break before flying to China for the WTA 125 Jingshan Tennis Open set from September 22 to 28.

Eala climbed to world No. 57 in the latest WTA rankings released Monday, September 15, just a step away from her career-best No. 56 that she reached last June after her runner-up finish in the WTA 250 Eastbourne Open in Great Britain.

The 20-year-old rising star surged five spots from No. 61 after advancing to the quarterfinals of the WTA 250 São Paulo Open in Brazil, where she fell to Indonesia’s Janice Tjen. The milestone comes on the heels of Eala’s historic triumph in Mexico, where she lifted her maiden WTA 125 trophy at the Guadalajara Open less than two weeks ago. In the Jingshan field, Eala will look to carry her momentum in pursuit of back-to-back titles.
