Puno: House leadership change, local politics factor in party movements

Changes in the House of Representatives lawmakers’ party memberships can be attributed to the leadership movements last September 2025, and local politics amid the looming 2028 elections, Deputy Speaker Ronaldo Puno said on Wednesday.

Puno, chairperson of the NUP, confirmed that several members of the ruling party Lakas-CMD moved to their group, bolstering NUP’s membership to 55. Puno also said that 12 more lawmakers are applying to be part of the party, but they may only accept four to five more members.

Part of the reason for the movements was the leadership change, which saw Isabela Rep. Faustino “Bojie” Dy III — a member of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) — get elected as speaker in place of Lakas-CMD stalwart and Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez.
