Palace: Marcos won’t interfere in Senate leadership change, impeachment

MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will not interfere in the leadership change in the Senate or in its handling of the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte, as such matters fall within the chamber’s authority, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said on Tuesday.

On Monday, Sen. Alan Cayetano was installed as the new Senate president, replacing Sen. Vicente “Tito” Sotto III. The move coincided with efforts in the House of Representatives to impeach Duterte.

“Well, everything that happens in the Senate is within their power; it is within their authority to decide on all matters within the Senate,” Castro said when asked whether Malacañang sees these changes as concerning.
