MANILA, Philippines — Several lawmakers have countered proposals for additional hearing dates on the impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte to observe due process, believing that the House committee on justice had already given the matter enough time.
They said that the Supreme Court had already reminded the House that while impeachment is political in nature, the provision of due process should not be suspended.
“Madam Chair, considering the weight of the evidence and testimonies presented in the previous hearing, I think it would be prudent for us, in the interest of fairness, and to afford the vice president every avenue for due process, to extend by one additional hearing date before this committee votes on probable cause,” he added.
