MANILA, Philippines — The varying proposals to ban political dynasties will surely spark heated debates among members of the House of Representatives, but such discussions will be good for democracy, Mamamayang Liberal party-list Rep. Leila de Lima said on Friday.
De Lima said this in an online interview, adding that she is still considering whether to adjust her proposed Anti-Political Dynasty Bill, which currently prohibits relatives of elected officials within the second degree of consanguinity, to a more stringent fourth-degree restriction.
The lawmaker made the statement after Caloocan 2nd District Rep. Edgar Erice — her party-mate in the Liberal Party — said he is open to a compromise in the Anti-Political Dynasty Bill as long as it can limit “fat” dynasties.
