MANILA, Philippines — Both the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) and the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) should continue providing discounts to commuters so that their expenses would be reduced amid high fuel prices and calls for fare hikes, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian said on Wednesday.
Gatchalian, in the preliminary report he made after two Senate proactive response and oversight for timely and effective crisis strategy (PROTECT) committee hearings, said that continued discounts would also encourage use of public transport — saving fuel and reducing traffic congestion.
“To continue helping the public by ensuring ease of travel and reducing daily commuting costs amid high oil prices, it is recommended that the across-the-board discounts of MRT-3 and LRT-2 remain in place until the state of national energy emergency is lifted or until considerable easing in fuel prices,” he said.
