MANILA, Philippines — Students and youth members of the Samahan ng Progresibong Kabataan (SPARK) held a rally in front of the Philippine National Police (PNP) headquarters in Quezon City on Monday afternoon to protest the alleged police brutality that transpired during the Sept. 21 anti-corruption demonstrations in Manila.
The group of 17 participants braved the inclement weather and called for the immediate release of all suspects, including a relative of one of its members, reportedly arrested by the police during a commotion in Mendiola on Sunday.
“So yesterday, there was a commotion in Mendiola, one of the siblings of our member was in that area. Tear gas was thrown in that area so, they had to go out of the house so he could get some air,” SPARK spokesperson Milo Basuel, speaking in Filipino, told reporters on Monday, And after that, the police suddenly arrested him. Now, he is still being held at whatever precinct in the Manila Police District, his parents are just trying to find a way for him to get out, he added.
