One person is reported dead, while another remains missing as 13 crew members of cargo vessel MV Jherlyn Khatness were rescued off after it sank off Lavezares, Northern Samar on Monday afternoon, the Coast Guard Station (CGS) Northern Samar said Tuesday.
According to a statement by the Office of Civil Defense on Tuesday, the incident occurred at around 2:30 p.m. when the ship was struck by rough waves that led to it capsizing.
“The vessel was carrying cement departed from Naga City, Cebu and was enroute to San Jose, Northern Samar, and encountered rough sea conditions, resulting in submersion after being struck by large waves,” CGS Northern Samar acting commander Ensign Brhyl Amay said in a notice to mariners.
