Ortega to VP Duterte: Welcome back, Ma’am – Sana ready ka na sa trial
MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Sara Duterte is officially back in the country, and as far as Deputy Majority Leader and La Union 1st District Rep. Paolo Ortega V is concerned, it’s time for her to face the next step in the impeachment process.

“Welcome back, Ma’am. Sana ready ka na sa trial,” Ortega said during a press briefing held at the Batasang Pambansa on Monday morning, shortly after news broke that the Vice President had returned from the Netherlands.

With a slight joke, Ortega added, “Di na ako umaasa ng pasalubong. What we really need right now is her full cooperation in the impeachment proceedings.”

Impeachment Case Overview

Vice President Duterte is currently facing an impeachment complaint filed by opposition lawmakers and watchdog groups, alleging misuse of confidential and intelligence funds during her stint as Secretary of Education. The complaint has already been deemed sufficient in form and substance by the House Committee on Justice, moving it to the next phase of the process.

Ngayon na nandito na muli si VP Duterte sa bansa, umaasa si Ortega at ang iba pang mambabatas na magiging transparent at handa siyang harapin ang mga alegasyon.

Political Climate and Expectations

Ortega clarified that while others may view the case as politically motivated, for him it’s purely about public accountability.

“Walang personalan. This is about upholding our laws and our democratic institutions. Lahat tayo, kahit mataas ang posisyon, dapat managot kapag may kwestyon sa panunungkulan,” he said.

The Deputy Majority Leader emphasized that the integrity of public office must be protected at all costs. “Kung may tanong, dapat may sagot. Kung may reklamo, dapat marinig ang magkabilang panig.”

Supporters and Critics React

While allies of the Vice President continue to defend her, saying the impeachment is part of a political smear campaign, critics argue that transparency and accountability must prevail.

“Nasa proseso na tayo. Let’s allow the evidence to speak for itself. What’s important is that we don’t let our positions get in the way of justice,” Ortega added.

VP Camp Still Silent

As of this writing, the Office of the Vice President has not yet issued an official statement regarding her return or her response to the impeachment complaint. However, insiders say a press statement or media appearance may be scheduled within the week.

Meanwhile, preparations continue for the next hearings, which are expected to capture national attention.
