The state weather bureau said 25 areas, including Metro Manila, are expected to reach “danger” level peak heat indices on Monday, May 26.
Heat index measures how high humidity combined with unusually high temperatures reduces the body’s ability to cool itself, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
Heat indices between 42ºC and 51ºC are classified as “danger category” because they significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
