The announcement was made on Monday by Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary and Press Officer Atty. Claire Castro, who stated that the President’s participation in the high-level regional meeting underscores the Philippines’ continuing commitment to regional cooperation, economic integration, and strategic diplomacy.
The ASEAN Summit is a biannual gathering of leaders from the 10-member regional bloc, which includes Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The summit serves as a platform for dialogue and collaboration on issues ranging from regional security and economic development to climate change, food security, and digital transformation.
While specific details of President Marcos’ agenda have yet to be released, Palace officials say he is expected to engage in several bilateral and multilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit. These meetings will likely include discussions with fellow ASEAN heads of state as well as dialogue partners such as China, the United States, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and India.
Strengthening ASEAN Ties
This marks another significant engagement for President Marcos Jr., who has consistently emphasized the importance of regional partnerships in the Philippines’ foreign policy. Since taking office in 2022, the President has made regional diplomacy a cornerstone of his administration, advocating for a more resilient and interconnected Southeast Asia amid shifting global dynamics.
“Our participation in ASEAN events reflects our steadfast dedication to strengthening our relationships with neighboring countries,” Castro said. “President Marcos believes that the ASEAN community plays a vital role in promoting peace, stability, and inclusive growth in the region.”
Key Topics for the 2025 Summit
This year’s ASEAN Summit is expected to tackle a broad range of pressing issues including:
- Regional responses to climate change and disaster resilience
- Enhancing digital and infrastructure connectivity across Southeast Asia.
- Strengthening collective responses to maritime security and regional disputes
- Promoting inclusive economic recovery and sustainable development
- Deepening partnerships with external dialogue partners
The ASEAN Chairmanship rotates annually among its member states. As host nation, Malaysia is anticipated to present its initiatives and priorities, aligning them with the bloc’s long-term goals as outlined in the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and beyond.
With growing geopolitical tensions and economic shifts in the Indo-Pacific region, ASEAN’s role as a central force in regional diplomacy has attracted global attention. The presence of President Marcos Jr. and other ASEAN leaders is seen as a demonstration of unity and the bloc’s determination to collectively address both internal and external challenges.
