Leviste: Congress separate from executive, should pass tax cuts

MANILA, Philippines — Batangas Rep. Leandro Legarda Leviste has doubled down on his call for Congress to pass proposed tax cuts, saying that the legislative branch should be able to do so despite the stand of the executive.

In a statement on Wednesday, Leviste said that his fellow Batangueños returned to the Batasang Pambansa to urge the House of Representatives to approve bills seeking to reduce the value-added tax on goods from 12 percent to 10 percent, and to suspend the value-added tax (VAT) on fuel products amid the Middle East conflict.

During the hearing of the House legislative energy and development committee on Wednesday, Leviste also urged members of the mega-panel, including presiding officer Marikina Rep. Miro Quimbo, to side with the majority of Congress, who want VAT cuts.
