Camille Villar calls for Senate probe into rising leptospirosis cases

MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Camille Villar has called for a Senate inquiry into the alarming rise of leptospirosis cases in the country, urging health authorities to strengthen prevention, control, and treatment measures against the disease.

In a resolution filed in the Senate, Villar sought an investigation, in aid of legislation, into how the Department of Health (DOH) and other concerned agencies are addressing the surge in infections and mapping strategies to reduce fatalities. She noted that the rainy season and extreme flooding often contribute to higher incidences of leptospirosis, particularly in flood-prone areas.

“Leptospirosis disease is a serious public health problem, mainly affecting the productive age group and those living in flood-prone areas,” Villar said, emphasizing the need for intensified public information drives, swift diagnosis, and timely administration of proper treatment.
